Year 12 Theatre Trip – Hadestown

Year 12 Theatre Trip – Hadestown

Year 12 A-Level English Literature students went on an exciting trip to witness the timeless masterpiece Hadestown at the Lyric Theatre. The acclaimed Broadway musical is a retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. In this modern edition, it is set using the backdrop of a struggling and destitute society where Persephone's absence causes a range of political and social issues to arise in the darkness of winter.

The students loved the feminist lens used to retell this story which transformed Eurydice from a passive damsel-in-distress to a pragmatic and logical woman, who is willing to go to great lengths to survive in a world not made for the sentimental. Due to their exam being centred around the theme of 'Women and Society', the students were able to make many links between the context and the character constructs as well as show an appreciation of the excellent stage-craft used by the director to drive the story.

Thank you to the English department for organising a truly unforgettable night at the theatre!
